“Whoso” in Proverbs: Part 3

“Whoso” in Proverbs: Part 3

The word “whoso” is found 27 times in the book of Proverbs (KJV). These occurrences are exactly one-half of the times that the word is found throughout the Book of God. Our current study involves some of these instances from this grand book of wisdom.

The eighth chapter of Proverbs in its entirety deals with wisdom. As with our first installment of this series (regarding Proverbs 1:33) and, as is often the case in Proverbs, wisdom is here again personified. Wisdom is given a voice and other attributes of a human being (i.e. verses 1-4). Among other things “wisdom” declares, “For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips” (vs. 7). Wisdom further reveals, “All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge” (vss. 8, 9). It is described as being better than rubies, silver and gold (vss. 11, 19). It declares its eternality, dwelling with Deity always (vss. 22, 23, 30). It pronounces a blessing upon the individual who seeks it (vs. 34). The conclusion drawn by wisdom is: “For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death” (vss. 35, 36).

James records, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (Jas. 1:5). As Solomon stated, finding wisdom is finding life. Hence, one would do well to seek wisdom in every situation at all costs. Or, as Solomon stated earlier, “If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” (Prov. 2:4-6). Is “wisdom” at the top of your “wish list?” For every Christian it certainly should be.
